What is Japan Society of Health Information Management?

Health information management provides a foundation of trust in healthcare. To build such trust through development and implementation of health information management and thereby contribute to raising the quality of healthcare, Japan Society of Health Information Management (JHIM) was established in 1975 as Japan Society of Medical Record Management, its predecessor organization. With more than 40 years of history, JHIM continues to grow as a scientific organization having 5,397 members as of 2015.
The birth of JHIM can be traced to the distance learning course for health information managers that Japan Hospital Association began offering in 1972. Certification of the first medical record manager two years later led to the founding of Japan Medical Record & Information Management Association (JMRIMA). In 1975, JMRIMA, with the support of Japan Hospital Association, convened the first scientific conference of what then became Japan Society of Medical Record Management. The governance structure whereby the board of directors oversees, under the Chairman, the management of the scientific organization was introduced in 1989. A decision was made in 1996 to apply a new job title of the “health information manager” to those who were then called “medical record managers.” Consequently, the organization name of Japan Society of Medical Record Management was changed to Japan Society of Health Information Management in 2009.
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) is an international classification of diseases owned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and recommended for use for international comparison of mortality, morbidity, and injury statistics in WHO Member States. In Japan, where ICD has been used for more than a century, Japan ICD Office, within the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, is responsible for matters related to ICD. JHIM works closely with Japan ICD Office for improvement and implementation of ICD, which is closely linked with the work of health information management. JHIM also represents Japan as the national member of the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations (IFHIMA), an NGO with official relations with WHO, and promotes active scientific exchange with various countries across the globe in the field of health information management. Against this backdrop, JHIM will serve as a co-host to the 18th IFHIMA Congress, from October 12 to 14, 2016, at Tokyo International Forum. It will be the first time for Japan to host an IFHIMA Congress. The 42nd Annual Meeting of JHIM will be held conjointly with the IFHIMA Congress.
As a scientific organization open to society both in and outside of Japan, JHIM is committed to serving humanity in the fields of health, healthcare and welfare.
